Bargain Alert of the Day for Fairfield, CT–Price Rite

Okay, so we could swear the price of green and red grapes went up from last week at Price Rite! But, still love it there. Did hear that there is not a loyalty card program at Price Rite from one of the cashiers…but will investigate more–for example, can we use a Shop Rite loyalty card there for any good deals? Will report back…

In the meantime…spotted some good bargains today:

-12 oz broad noodles for .99 cents (great because noodles have gone up in price elsewhere for the same amount to nearly $2.00 a package).

-Blue Bunny chocolate popsicles for $1.29.

-…and a favorite this week, too: Perdue ground turkey 1 lb package for $1.49 (typically $2.50 to $2.99 elsewhere).

Bargain Alert of the Day for Fairfield, CT — Part Two, How to Shop Price Rite

As promised in Part One, there is a 5-step process to shopping at Price Rite that you will want to follow to make your trip easier. There will be a Part Three –there is more information from Price Rite that needs to be investigated another day (loyalty cards, etc.).

Address: Price Rite is at 4425 Main Street in Bridgeport. The easiest way from Fairfield is to drive towards Stop & Shop on Madison Avenue, take a turn on Vincelette Boulevard, and follow it to Main Street. Price Rite is on your left.

Note: Price Rite is not a luxury grocery store. You will be going outside of your comfort zone, but in many ways, it is worth it. We know many people have never been to a Price Rite, or avoided the one on Boston Post Road in Bridgeport, but the new one on Main Street is more convenient, cleaner, brighter, and seemingly safer.

Though this is odd to say, when shopping at Price Rite, you don’t want to stick out like a sore thumb there while fumbling around and looking lost. Really–trust the Two Frugal Fairfielders on this one–we’ve shopped Price Rite for years, but took a break–now it’s back to Price Rite…

How To Shop Price Rite in Bridgeport:

1. Go as early in the day as you can. Mornings are best.

2. Go on a weekday — weekends are jammed and not fun to shop.

3. Bring your own bags but when you shop, but do not pack them as you shop. You need to put all your groceries on the belt for check out. You can bag groceries AFTER you check out at the front of the store. Just glance up to see what everyone else is doing. Or, you can buy Price Rite bags (they are roomy and durable) for .10 cents each. Many people buy 10 and keep them in the car for reuse.

4. Do not bring coupons, Price Rite does not accept them.

5. They accept all forms of payment.

6. Most important–do not to there and expect to get out quickly. Do not rush through the aisles. People who shop Price Rite are surveying for bargains, so don’t bang into anyone, rush around them or act rude. This Frugal Fairfielder has experienced incredibly rude behavior by Fairfield shoppers towards other shoppers in Trader Joe’s and in the Stop & Shop by the circle near the beach. You must act like a human being in Price Rite because you are also shopping with people who are the salt of the earth and who are on strict budgets.

7. Be courteous to the check out person. REALLY! Again, there is absolutely awful behavior going on in Fairfield in various stores (personally witnessed), but if you are nice to the check-out person, especially at Price Rite, you will have a better experience.

4. Go for the store and generic brands (some of the store brands come directly from sister chain, ShopRite–that’s the store that is taking over Shaw’s on Black Rock Turnpike). Most of the generic products that you will find at Price Rite are just like the generic store brand products you will find at any other are store, and they are just fine, taste great, and are well worth it.

5. The meat department seems quite limited–lots of chicken, but no great bargains, so don’t go expecting to find the best bargains there. For example, you can buy boneless chicken breasts for $1.99 at Price Rite, but you can find them for that price mostly anywhere during a sale.

If you don’t mind buying store brands or generic, you will want to head to Price Rite on Main Street in Bridgeport. This Frugal Fairfielder purchased $47.50 worth of groceries that would have gone for more than $60 or $70 at other area stores.

If you must have your favorite brands, Price Rite has some of them, but not all, and it is hit or miss with the prices (always check the unit prices, especially important at Price Rite where something looks gooooood and cheap, but compare it to other products’ unit prices and it’s not so goooood and cheap).

Here are a few great finds of the day–there are more there, but will find them next time.

Best Bets:

Generics: Napkins 250 count for $1.49, Apple Juice $1.19, Romaine lettuce .63 cents, jug of OJ for $2.49 (same thing is $3.99 elsewhere), gallon of ice cream in various flavors $1.79 (pretty good price).

Brands: Perdue Chopped Turkey 1 lb. pkg $1.49!  Axelrod Yogurts for .33 cents a cup, there are more…

Update On Shaw’s and Tip About Price Rite

Shaw’s on Black Rock Turnpike will most likely close earlier than the reported March 25th date. Tomorrow, the folks there will find out the actual closing date. They are no longer giving out rain checks and the shelves are getting a bit bare, but…STILL NO GREAT SALES THERE! One of the grocery check out ladies said that next week, most likely, all the sales will start. We’ll see…

Another friend of TwoFrugalFairfielders reported that her weekly trips to the new Price Rite on Main Street in Bridgeport have slashed her food bill in half. This friend is already frugal so her bill must be very small…TwoFrugalFairfielders will report back–we will make a trip there next week to report if it’s as good and cheap as the original store on Boston Ave. in Bridgeport. But…is it safe to shop in? That’s the question we have…

Would You Risk Your Life for a Bargain?

 

Do I risk my life for a bargain at Price Rite?

Okay…I live in Fairfield, so what was I doing shopping at Price Rite in Bridgeport? You can’t imagine the horror I saw on many people’s faces when I told them I shopped there! So…I started to believe them–”…so dangerous,” “…are you crazy shopping there?” You can imagine the comments. I sadly stopped shopping there over a year ago…and I really, really, really miss the bargains. So…a new Price Rite is opening on Main Street in Bridgeport. Not the best area, but, not the worst. Do I go there? What do I do? What risks do we take in finding our bargains? Is it worth it to go to a questionable part of town to buy a 50 ounce Ajax laundry detergent for ninety-nine cents? Do I even like Ajax detergent? But I know from experience the prices are about 30-plus percent lower than my local Stop & Shop and Shaw’s. (But…Price Rite also doesn’t have that nifty gas savings program, either.)

This question does keep popping up. My friend, Aimee, took her life in her hands when she went to pick up a Freecycle item in the depths of Bridgeport. She’s very much alive to speak of it. I went hunting down a Freecyle item in Shelton–and the house was located down a long, long heavily treed path–and I thought, uh-oh…where am I going–no one knows I came here to get my son a free Hot Wheels comforter…oh, no! I’m very much alive to speak about it.

But what about Price Rite? Do I dare? Is it worth it? Do you risk your safety to snag a bargain?
